Digitalise Singapore for Youth

Exabytes and the Research & Innovation Corps (RIC) of Cyber Youth Singapore (CYS) has launched a joint technology programme entitled Digitalise Singapore (DS) for Youth

The aim of this programme is to encourage and inspire innovation, entrepreneurship and technological research among Singaporean youth between 13 to 35 years old.

This programme includes both the Cyber Youth Innovators Programme (CYIP) and Cyber Youth Researchers Programme (CYRP) and seeks to impact 1,000 youths.

Digitalise Singapore for Youth Sponsorship

With $150,000 worth of sponsorship in terms of digital solutions and services, this programme aims to support ground-up technical projects by youths in Singapore. Digitalise Singapore will pilot for one year starting from 22 May 2021.

This CSR project was developed to support and nurture outstanding students who require assistance in digitising their ideas and projects. Especially the youngsters, who are the hope of the nation.

Exabytes Singapore is deeply committed to assisting people on their journey to digitise their businesses.

However, we too are also very passionate about helping individuals, not just business owners, who want to digitise their ideas and initiatives but lack the resources or platform to do it.

Our principles align with the goals of Cyber Youth Singapore (CYS), hence the CSR programme was launched.

About Cyber Youth Singapore

Cyber Youth Singapore is a non-profit youth organisation wholly led by young people. With a vision focused on cybersecurity, they hope to provide a platform for Singaporean youth to safely and responsibly explore their interest in technology alongside their peers.

Digitalise Singapore for Youth

Youths will learn relevant digitalisation skills such as Domain Setup, Web Hosting and VPS as part of this programme.

This curriculum will provide students with the knowledge they need to improve their tech and programming skills, growing their digitalisation journey for a smoother and successful career in the growing digital industry.

Domain setup is the first step in building an online identity that allows youth to own a domain name of their choice.
Web hosting plan that allows youth to experiment with building their online presence by developing their own website or online store.
Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a tool for our youth to create their own codes on the server, running a development server to hone their programming skills and to experiment with different programming languages.

All of these are considered essential in today’s digital business community. A domain name is required to launch a website, and a webhosting plan is required to allow us to upload all of the website’s files, content, and information.

Additionally, Virtual Private Server allows us to improve website performance and scalability.

Furthermore, Exabytes believes that with this collaboration, more youths will be prepared with the skills necessary to contribute significantly to economic growth in the future.

Understand the difference between Web Hosting and Virtual Private Server (VPS)

What is Web Hosting?

Hosting is like the house of a website. It stores the website files. There are many types of houses.

Technically, all websites are hosted on a server.

Signing up for hosting is a process of renting or buying a space for your website on the World Wide Web, so your site can be viewed or visited online.

1. Shared Hosting

Shared Hosting is a starting point for many student projects, small businesses, bloggers, and eCommerce sites with lower traffic. In Shared Hosting Plans, many websites are hosted on a single server.

In other words, you don’t get your own dedicated private space. All websites on the server share the same server resources, OS and software.

If you are just a beginner and want to have some hands-on experience with website development, then apply for shared hosting. Shared hosting solutions should be enough to meet your requirement.

At this stage, you will not need any resource-rich services, which will usually incur more costs based on the resources required.

2. WordPress Hosting

WordPress Hosting is hosting designed especially for WordPress websites. WordPress hosting is packed with WordPress related software and features.

There are pre-installed plugins, and you can simply install WordPress with one click. The server has been configured according to WordPress.

WordPress is one of the most recognized and popular CMS systems, it is easy to use and install, and very flexible.

WordPress provides fairly easy-to-follow instructions, and if you are not proficient in back-end technology (coding/ programming), then you should go with WordPress.

CMS stands for content management system. To make it simple, this is how you add and manage content on your website.

Everything you display on the website is considered content, whether we are talking about pictures, videos, or text. So the first step is to decide what type of content you want to show. The second is to push the content out.

3. Virtual Private Server (VPS)

VPS is packed with hosting resources that are rather similar to a dedicated server. You will be using the server resources allocated for you on a server, and the traffic and activities of other websites on the same server will not have an impact on you.

This makes your website blazingly fast, smooth and secure.

VPS is also fully packed with high tech security pre-sets. You can simply install it in One Click or customize it according to your requirements.

This is the reason Why VPS is secured, stable and Fast Hosting but is still able to cater to a smaller budget as compared to a dedicated server.

When you think you are ready to fully expand your website, you may need more technical management flexibility, more resources than web hosting, and more traffic than before, then you can consider applying for VPS.
